Asarum canadense

Wild ginger is deciduous and forms thick patches in shady, rich soils of Eastern North America. Although unrelated to root ginger, the rhizomes of Asarum canadense have that same spicy sweet fragrance. While it is an ethnobotanically important wild food, we do not recommend consuming any part of this plant. Enjoy it as woodland groundcover - and be sure to get close to the ground to observe its unique flowers in late spring.
