Trillium sessile

Red toad trillium is native to much of the Eastern US. Trilliums grow best in richly organic soils of deciduous forests. They emerge in early spring and go dormant once the heat of summer sets in. This one has maroon petals and mottled leaves. The scent is somewhat foul, attracting flies and beetle for pollination.

Sessile refers to the stemless flowers.
