Prunus americana

Prunus americana grows all over North America and has long provided benefits for wildlife and humans, especially many indigenous peoples. This tree, like all wild plums, seem to have a mind of their own, so you can never quite predict the taste, color, and crop size. That's diverse genetics for ya! But it's a tree worth growing and making into jams, fruit leather, and plum sauce (see the blog). Expect a tart skin but sweet flesh if ripe. They usually ripen from yellow to red in late summer.
