Description
The chickasaw plum is a wild American plum that grows all the way from the east coast to the west coast. It likes drier soils, so it often is found in prairies, sandy open woodlands, and on roadsides. It certainly has a "wildness" to it with its occasional thorns and thicket forming habit. But the chickasaw plum is well worth growing for its edible fruit and benefit to wildlife that also uses it for food and shelter. Native Americans, such as the Chickasaw and Cherokee, cultivated it for food.
