Allium X proliferum

The walking onion is a zany allium with Medusa-like aerial bulblets that twist in the air then fall to the ground. In this way, the onion slowly creeps, or "walks", to create a regenerative patch. It's low maintenance and likes average conditions. The obvious spot is a veg garden, but also consider its ornamental value.

The entire onion is edible. Harvest the greens for a pronounced green onion flavor. Harvest the base bulb for a sharp white onion flavor. Early spring is prime for eating.
