Description
Tall thimbleweed is a native perennial that can tolerate full shade and rocky soils - although it performs best in moist, sandy-humusy soils with some sun exposure. Erect stems of white sepals brighten up a woodland garden in spring. The center of the flower, which bears the stamens, is citron green and protrudes like a gumdrop (or a thimble, which is how the common name describes it). The "thimble" eventually erupts into a fluffy, white tuft of seeds.
