Description

Bush's poppy mallow is native to the Great Plains, although somewhat rare in the wild. It's an herbaceous perennial that likes dry, sunny sites with loose sandy or rocky soil. A long taproot allows this plant to handle poor dry soils but can make transplanting difficult.

The taproot is a choice edible - mild and starchy like a potato. Wild foraging might not be the best option due to its small endemic range, so why not grow your own?

It's named after American botanist Benjamin Franklin Bush.
