The copper iris is endemic to wet bogs and swamps in the southern/central parts of the U.S., especially Louisiana. It does best in full to part sun and can handle poor-draining clay soils. It will also grow in shallow standing water up to 6 inches, making it a great choice for bog gardens, stream banks, and floodplains.
